Parents & guardians can help their child(ren) adjust to their separation and/or divorce.

Parents Apart®

Parents Apart® is a six-hour workshop (three two-hour virtual sessions) certified by the New York State Parent Education & Awareness Program. It is designed for parents who want to help their child(ren) adjust to their separation and/or divorce. The workshop focuses on the emotional reaction of children to their parents' separation or divorce and methods parents can use to help make the transition easier for children.

Workshops cover the following topics:

  • Emotional reaction of children to their parents' separation and/or divorce
  • Promotion of good parenting to help children adjust after a separation and/or divorce by teaching listening skills and conflict management
  • Avoidance of common pitfalls parents experience during separation and/or divorce
  • Discuss mediation and collaboration - among other legal options open to families
  • Exploration of the legal resources available

There is a $50 registration fee to cover workshop expenses. The workshop is open to all regardless of ability to pay. The fee is waived for those whose income is within the federal poverty guidelines.

Parents of the same child(ren) will be placed in different workshops. Childcare for this workshop is not available; the workshop is not suitable for children.
